During Samsung’s January 2024 Galaxy Unpacked event, the company teased a new wearable device called the Galaxy Ring.

Although rumors had been circulating about the product for some time, this was the first time Samsung publicly acknowledged it. No physical details were disclosed at the event, but Samsung’s Head of Customer Experience revealed that the hardware is ready, but the software is still in development. It is expected to be launched later in the year, possibly alongside the Galaxy Watch 7 during the Summer Unpacked event.

Lisa Eadicicco from CNET’s, who got to see a prototype, reported that the ring will be available in silver, dark gray, and gold colors, and will have a sleek and minimalist appearance. Although the ring will be larger than typical women’s jewelry, it will be surprisingly light in weight, and it will be available in sizes up to 13.”
“Samsung spokesperson Amber Reaver stated that the Galaxy Ring is designed to help people manage their health with a comprehensive approach to everyday wellness at home. The ring will feature leading sensor technologies and will be comfortable enough to wear 24/7. Samsung has been focusing on sleep tracking in recent years, and the Galaxy Ring would be ideal for tracking sleep since it is small and subtle and can be worn overnight.”

It seems interesting the kind of direction that Samsung has taken direction towards health products in recent years and you can easily see how something like the Galaxy Ring would fit into that. Samsung has been playing big on sleep tracking in recent years. It’s been putting a lot of resources into that area and of course, something small like a Galaxy ring that fits on your finger is much more subtle and easier to wear overnight than a smartwatch.

Even though we don’t know anything about the product yet you can imagine that something that small that doesn’t have a screen would probably have LONGER BATTERY LIFE than the Galaxy Watch, making it ideal to track your sleep.

Samsung also announced that the Samsung Health app will receive updates later this year to provide more insights and advise to users about their day and offer recommendations based on their activity and sleep.

Now, all of this seems a lot like the Oura Ring. However, Samsung is trying to focus more on holistic wellness where the Samsung Health app, along with the Galaxy Ring, is not just going to show trends, statistics, or how your heart rate or step count has increased but will provide more advise about how you can make some changes in your lifestyle and daily routine to stay fit. This is something companies like Oura and even Fitbit have been doing for years, but now that generative AI is here, we think we’re going to see a lot more of that.

You’ll be amazed to know that Samsung Fitbit also teased a new program called Fitbit Labs that should be coming sometime this year. This program will monitor different types of data to analyse information like if you went for a run today and your run felt more difficult than usual. With the help of Fitbit Labs, which uses generative AI, users can gain more insights into their health and well-being.
