The social media alternative Bluesky, backed by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, has scrapped its invite-only model and is now opening its gates to all users. With over 3 million users, Bluesky mimics the features of the original Twitter but lacks direct messaging functionality.
Additionally, Bluesky plans to introduce its own open-source AT protocol named “Federation” by the end of the month, which is touted to allow users to create their social media network.
The idea behind ‘Federation’ is to empower users to transfer their social connections and data to competing social media platforms, aligning with Bluesky’s vision of creating ‘the last social account’ they’ll ever need to create on the internet.
CEO Jay Graber mentioned a cautious approach to the rollout of the AT protocol to ensure a smooth transition without abrupt changes.
Also, according to the Bloomberg report,” The concept of Bluesky originated during Dorsey’s tenure at Twitter, envisioning a decentralised social network free from corporate control.”
The rise of decentralised social media platforms, exemplified by Meta’s Threads app, underscores the growing interest in open-source protocols like ActivityPub. This trend reflects users’ dissatisfaction with centralised platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), especially following significant changes under Elon Musk’s ownership.
Bluesky’s emergence offers users a familiar alternative to X while potentially challenging the dominance of large corporations in the social media landscape.
